Microsoft has developed its own Linux-based OS for cloud-based services

Finally Microsoft goes Linux, develops it’s in-house software-defined networking OS, ACS

Currently, Microsoft is working on a Linux-based operating system that is aimed at driving the networking hardware in the enterprise space. Until now, the diverse set of networking hardware available was run on different software platforms, which made managing them a nightmare.
Microsoft is working on building Azure Cloud Switch (ACS), which is the company’s first foray into switch hardware and it has Linux under the hood. The ACS will make it simple to control the hardware that powers cloud-based services.
The company calls it “a cross-platform modular operating system for data networking built on Linux.” The Linux-based ACS is a software to debug, fix and test software bugs much faster.
“We believe this approach of disaggregating the switch software from the switch hardware will continue to be a growing trend in the networking industry and we would like to contribute our insights and experiences of this journey starting here,” said Kamala Subramanian, Redmond’s principal architect for Azure Networking.
She also pointed out that, “It also allows us the flexibility to scale down the software and develop features that are required for our datacenter and our networking needs.”
Though Microsoft did not tell why it needed to develop its own Linux distribution, Subramanian said that ACS believes in the power of Open Networking and aims for easier configuration and management by integrating with Microsoft’s monitoring and diagnostics system. By moving away from the traditional enterprise interactive model of command line interfaces, it allows for switches to be managed just as servers are with weekly software rollouts and roll backs, thus ensuring a mature configuration and deployment model. Using Linux, ACS is also able to use the vibrant Linux ecosystem and support the Open Source and Third Party applications.
Subramanian says, “We’re talking about ACS publicly as we believe this approach of disaggregating the switch software from the switch hardware will continue to be a growing trend in the networking industry and we would like to contribute our insights and experiences of this journey starting here.”
The company writes, “At Microsoft, we believe there are many excellent switch hardware platforms available on the market, with healthy competition between many vendors driving innovation, speed increases, and cost reductions.”
The new Microsoft under Satya Nadella shows that it is not afraid to adopt open source technologies while implementing solutions, as long as it gets the job done. In this case, even Linux.

Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge and Mozilla Firefox to stop supporting RC4 cipher by 2016

Major browser team up to announce end of support for RC4 cipher by 2016

With a view to make Internet browsing more safer for the users, Google, Microsoft and Mozilla have come to a agreement to stop support for RC4 cryptographic cipher in the companies’ browsers by early 2016.
RC4 aka Rivest Cipher 4 also known as ARC4 or ARCFOUR is a stream cipher used for cryptography in Internet browsers. While it was remarkably simple and fast,  multiple vulnerabilities have been discovered in it making it most insecure cipher. It is especially vulnerable when the beginning of the output keystream is not discarded, or when nonrandom or related keys are used; some ways of using RC4 can lead to very insecure protocols such as WEP.
The browser behemoths have decided to completely stop using RC4 cipher from 2016. “For Firefox, that means version 44, currently scheduled for release on Jan 26,” noted Mozilla’s Richard Barnes. “That is, as of Firefox 44, RC4 will be entirely disabled unless a user explicitly enables it through one of the preferences.”
Google on the other hand will push a Chrome update in January or February 2016.”Measurements show that only 0.13% of HTTPS connections made by Chrome users (who have opted into statistics collection) currently use RC4. Even then, affected server operators can very likely simply tweak their configuration to enable a better cipher suite in order to ensure continued operation,” Google’s Adam Langley pointed out.
“Current versions of Chrome don’t advertise support for RC4 on an HTTPS connection unless the first connection attempt fails, so servers that already support a non-RC4 cipher suite will not see any change.”
Microsoft has made the official announcement yesterday. “Microsoft Edge and Internet Explorer 11 only utilize RC4 during a fallback from TLS 1.2 or 1.1 to TLS 1.0. A fallback to TLS 1.0 with RC4 is most often the result of an innocent error, but this is indistinguishable from a man-in-the-middle attack. For this reason, RC4 will be entirely disabled by default for all Microsoft Edge and Internet Explorer users on Windows 7, Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 starting in early 2016,” explained Alec Oot, a Program Manager with Microsoft.
Microsoft had intended to deprecate the SHA-1 algorithm in 2013. Internet Explorer does not offer RC4-based cipher suites during the initial TLS/SSL handshake as the first option.

Stop Forced Updates For Windows 10 With These 3 Simple Methods

Dont like forced Windows 10 updates, try out these 3 different methods to stop them

Windows 10 is once again in news for its policy of forced updates. These forced updates which download and install automatically have been creating nightmares for many of the users.
So, how do we stop them? Looks, like we now have three potential options that can an answer to this, which has their own advantages and disadvantages. Read below to find out which option is more feasible for you.

Option 1: Stop The Windows Update Service

Though Windows Update is the central and most important part of Windows 10, it can be stopped with these simple steps, as it is just an another Windows process update:
  1. Open the Run command (Win + R) and type: services.msc and press enter
  2. On pressing enter, the services list will pop up, find the Windows Update service and open it
  3. Select Startup Type’ (under the ‘General’ tab) and change it to ‘Disabled’
    Restart
  4. Simply repeat these four steps to re-enable Windows Update and change the Startup Type to ‘Automatic’.

Option 2: Setup A Metered Connection

Users of Windows 10 on metered connections are provided a compromise by Microsoft. According to Microsoft, the operating system will only automatically download and install updates categorized as ‘Priority’, in order to save bandwidth.
Though Microsoft chooses not to disclose its method of categorization, this definitely reduces the number of updates related to software features and new drivers, both of which have already created stability problems.
  1. Open the Settings app (Win + I)
  2. Open the ‘Network & Internet’ section
  3. Open ‘Wi-Fi’ and click ‘Advanced Options’
  4. Toggle to ‘Set as metered connection’ to ‘On’
Note: The Metered Connection option will be disabled, if your PC uses an Ethernet cable to connect to the Internet, as it works with Wi-Fi connections only.

Option 3: Group Policy Editor

While the group policy editor will notify you about new updates without automatically installing them, but, no notifications would be provided regarding security updates and would still be installed automatically. However, this option is available only for Windows 10 Education, Pro and Enterprise editions and not for Windows 10 Home users.
  1. Open the Run command (Win + R), and type: gpedit.msc and press enter
  2. Navigate to: Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Components -> Windows Update
  3. Open Windows Update and change the Configure Automatic Updates setting to ‘2 – Notify for download and notify for install’
  4. Open the Settings app (Win + I) and navigate to -> Update and Security -> Windows Updates. Click ‘Check for updates’ that would apply the new configuration setting
  5. Restart
For Windows 10 users, whose do not have group policy access can follow the steps below:
  1. Open the Run command (Win + R), and type: regedit and press enter
  2. Navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU
  3. Create a ‘32-bit DWORD’ value called ‘AuOptions’ in there and under ‘Value Data’ type 2 and click ‘OK’
  4. Open the Settings app (Win + I) and navigate to -> Update and Security -> Windows Updates. Click ‘Check for updates’ which applies the new configuration setting
  5. Restart
Surprisingly, Microsoft also provides a little different fourth option that is worth thinking over

The Show/Hide Tool

It’s quite weird that the so-called ‘Show/Hide Tool’ is not a part of Windows 10 nor it can be found through Windows Update. However, you can download it from Microsoft by clicking here.
The Show/Hide Tool is not aggressive as the three options above. Though it does not stop any automatic updates from downloading and installing, it does allow you to ‘Hide’ an update from Windows 10. This means that it would not reinstall Windows Update automatically, if you have uninstalled it. This comes handy if a particular update is creating problems for your system. Also, the Show/Hide Tool does not work with Priority Updates.
Looking at the options available and seeing how useful they are, it’s high time for a reality check for Microsoft.
While the default automatic update of Windows 10 may be a very good thing, however, you do get proactive disable updates option if preferred from every equivalent rival desktop OSes and mobile OSes to web browsers. At the same time, there should be at least an option to have greater control over the pre-install update notifications for Windows 10.

Make Your Google Chrome Faster For Web Browsing

Short Bytes: Sometimes, slow web browsing could be a real headache and it’s irritating for most of us. If your data connection is fast enough, this could be a result of your sluggish web browser. To solve this issue, we are here with some useful tips and tricks to make your Google Chrome faster and thus boosting up your browser’s performance.
Google Chrome is undisputedly the best and one of the most popular web browser available in the market. According to different surveys, about 25-28 percent people browse the web using Google Chrome. Talking about the speed, benchmark tests put Chrome at the top without any hesitation. To improve the web browsing experience and making it faster, Google has introduced many features like better security measures and new protocols.
Even though Chrome is the fastest web browser available, it’s often bashed for eating up your RAM and slowing down your PC. To make Google Chrome faster than ever, we’re here with some simple tweaks and tricks. After performing these steps, you are bound to experience increased speed in Google Chrome.
For everyday use, Chrome works just fine. But if you are a power user, you can try out few experimental options of Chrome. These tweaks use your PC muscle to make Google Chrome faster improve the performance.
Let’s take a look at them one by one:

Method 1: Using flags setting to make Google Chrome faster:

Your Google Chrome browser has a hidden browser feature known as “flags” that can be used for testing purposes and improving the performance of Google Chrome.
These features are experimental and they may change, disappear or break anytime. So, as soon as you proceed with this method and open the flags in your Google Chrome browser to make it faster, Google shows the following message as a warning:
These experimental features may change, break, or disappear at any time. We make absolutely no guarantees about what may happen if you turn one of these experiments on, and your browser may even spontaneously combust. Jokes aside, your browser may delete all your data, or your security and privacy could be compromised in unexpected ways. Any experiments you enable will be enabled for all users of this browser. Please proceed with caution.
However, the steps we are going to mention ahead, are not much to be worried about and you can hack you Google Chrome browser to increase its speed and overall performance. If you notice any glitches, you can always revert back the changes with the same simple steps mentioned ahead.
Take a look at these steps to change the “flags” settings in Google Chrome to make it faster than ever: (Click to enlarge the images)
1. Type chrome://flags/ in the search bar of Google Chrome to open the flags page. Here you can see tons of things to change and create a havoc in Google Chrome. But, proceed carefully and don’t change any setting on your own.

2. Search for Maximum tiles for interest area and set it to 512. This step actually increases the RAM that Chrome is allowed to use and thus makes your Google Chrome a lot faster.
It’ll be easier to locate the items in flags if you perform the search using Ctrl+F in Windows and Cmd+F in Mac as the items in flags are not much organized.

Method 2: Google’s prerendering suggestion to make web pages load faster

In a blog post, Google explains the method of prerendering the links that can make your Google Chrome faster. Actually, while browsing, Chrome predicts the links you might click and it prepares them to load instantly for you.
For example: If you are on a web page and there’s a read more or next page link, Google Chrome intuitively prerenders the web page and serves it instantly as you click on it. Also, by enabling this option for increasing the Google Chrome speed, you browser predicts the web pages you might enter in the address bar and shows them as you hit enter. Chrome does this by looking at your browsing habits.
Here’s the way to turn on these network action predictions:
On you PC:
1. Click on the hamburger Chrome menu symbol located at the top right corner of your Chrome browser to open the settings.
2.Go to Settings and then click on Show advanced settings.
3. Now in the privacy section check Prefetch resources to load pages more quickly.
On your Android device:
1. Tap on the Chrome menu and open Settings.
2. Under Advanced, find Privacy and open it.
3. Now look for the option Prefetch page resources.
4. You’ll be greeted with following options, choose the desired one to make your Google Chrome faster:
  • Always: Chrome will always preload webpages even when you’re using mobile data. This way, you may end up using a large chunk of mobile data.
  • Only on Wi-Fi: Chrome will only preload webpages on Wi-Fi network. This is the default option.
  • Never: If you are using a very limited data plan, select this to stop Google Chrome from preloading the web pages.

Method 3: Using speed up extensions to make Google Chrome faster

While writing about making Mozilla firefox faster for web browsing, I already mentioned that I personally don’t like lots of extensions installed in my browser. This is so because sometimes, these extensions are also a hindrance in speeding up the speed of your browser. But, there are few useful extensions that can help you to speed up your Google Chrome.
1. The Great Suspender: It’s my personal favorite extension and stops Chrome from killing your PC by eating tons of RAM. This extension suspends the unused tabs in Chrome, saves your PC juice and makes Google Chrome faster.
2. Better Browse: This extension makes web browsing on Google Chrome about 15% faster by using some simple tweaks already mention in this tutorial.

Method 4: Random methods to make Google Chrome faster

1.  Type chrome://plugins/ in URL box and disable the unnecessary plugins as they make your Google Chrome slower.
2. Type chrome://extensions/ in URL box and delete the extension that are unnecessary or not in use for long time.
3. Type chrome://settings/clearBrowserData and clear browsing history from beginning (Uncheck Cached images and files and other below options).

That’s it! These were the best methods which will help you to increase your web browsing speed and make Google chrome faster than ever.
