Who's Tracking Your Smartphone?

Safety should always be our top priority. With the help of just a few short codes, you can find out more about the settings of your phone and work out whether or not your messages and information are protected and whether you’re being tracked.

We has gathered together some of the most useful and important codes for smartphones all in one article, together with some instructions for those who’re worried about being tracked.

With this code, you can find out whether your calls, messages, and other data are being diverted. The status of the different types of diversions that are taking place along with the number the information is being transferred to will be displayed on your phone’s screen. This function is most often set up by either jealous partners or parents who are trying to protect their kids from spam or criminals. Elderly people often become victims of this practice when they lend their phone to a stranger to make a single call. If they do so, they risk having information about where they live, who their friends and family are, their habits and daily activities, and even their financial circumstances passed on to criminals.
Dial this code if you want to find out where calls, messages, and data are being redirected to if it seems that no one can get through to you. The chances are in this case that your voice calls are being redirected to one of your cell phone operator’s numbers.
This is a universal code for switching off all forms of redirection away from your phone. It’s a good idea to use this before you have to use roaming. In this case, money won’t be taken from your account for calls that are redirected by default to your voice mail.
With the help of this code, you can find out your IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identifier). If you know this number, you can find your phone if someone steals it. When switched on, its location is automatically conveyed to the network operator even if a different SIM card is inserted. If someone knows your IMEI number, they can find out the model and technical characteristics of your phone.
Special codes exist that allow someone to track your location and also to determine whether someone is following you. For this, you need the utility net-monitor. Type in one of the following codes:

for iPhone: *3001#12345#*
for Android: *#*#4636#*#* or *#*#197328640#*#*

Step 1. Go to the section called UMTS Cell Environment, then UMTS RR info, and write down all the numbers under Cell ID. These numbers are the basic stations located nearby. Your phone will connect by default to the one that emits the best signal.

Step 2. Go back to the main menu, and click on the MM info tab, then on Serving PLMN. Write down the numbers under Local Area Code (LAC).

Step 3. With the help of these two numbers and an ordinary website (the fourth tab to the left), you can determine the location on the map of the basic station that your phone is connected to.

The ones to be suspicious of are mobile basic stations — this could be a truck or small bus with a large antenna. These kinds of vehicles are used at rock festivals and in places where Internet coverage is poor. If there’s one of them nearby, seemingly without any logical reason, it’s just possible that someone is engaged in spying.
If you use Android, you should periodically check your phone for viruses. Place Raiders one of the most dangerous ones that can infect your device. Developed by American experts, it was meant to show how vulnerable our devices are. Once it gets onto a phone, this Trojan takes a series of photographs of the surrounding area, creates a 3D model of the building you’re in, and then takes advantage of any Internet connection to send the data that it’s gathered, adding along with it all the data on the phone and your passwords.
  • National security agencies in virtually all countries now cooperate with cell phone operators, who often provide the former with access to information on any of their customers provided they have a warrant from a court. As a minimum, they provide data from the last three months.

  • If your phone has been tapped by a security agency, the chances are you won’t even notice. If a phone makes odd noises during a conversation, loses battery power rapidly, overheats, or unexpectedly restarts, this is merely an indication that you need to get it repaired rather than a telltale sign that you’re being listened to.

  • People generally don’t reveal all that much in phone conversations, so from the point of view of those who want to listen in it’s much more worthwhile to set up special devices ("bugs") in someone’s home. Radio wave detectors can be used to work out whether such bugs are present in a building.
  • Use messaging apps that are completely closed to outsiders, such as Telegram, Chare, Wickr, or Signal.

  • Determine what information it’s safe to make accessible to all. Should everyone really be able to find out your phone number or have access to information about your family, loved ones, or your lifestyle? Be very careful when posting photographs of children.

  • Don’t install unknown programs on your phone, keep close track of the apps you have installed, and use multiple security locks wherever you can. Don’t click on unsafe links, and don’t connect your phone to suspicious "free" charging points.

  • Only your cell phone operator should ever offer you tracking services, and they should only turn them on with your explicit agreement. Websites and applications that offer to find out the location of other people are almost certainly acting with criminal intent. Be careful!

G DATA’s releases SECURE CHAT that tap-proofs mobile messaging

G DATA LAUNCHES SECURITY MESSAGING APP FOR ANDROID THAT ENCRYPTS ALL FILE EXCHANGES

G DATA, an IT security solutions provider based out of Germany, today announced that it would be releasing its own multiple-encrypted SMS client and chat communication application that hopes to bring the highest level of security to your private messages with its app, SECURE CHAT.
According to G DATA, the app will be initially available for Android and is designed to your messages private from any outsiders who might try to gain access to them using end-to-end encryption. It protects privacy of the users against data leeches and cyber eavesdropping. It can also be used to share files safely through the use of the Axolotl protocol.
SECURE CHAT helps secure all file exchanges, including photos, videos and other media. The Axolotl protocol that is included in the app features an elliptic curve cryptography process, which is regarded to be almost not possible to hack, and allows end-to-end encryption for both individual and group chats. G DATA SECURE CHAT is available now for free in the Google Play store.
Moreover, the application allows the users to retain the rights to their texts and images and need not fear that third parties might exploit or re-use them. Thanks to the self-destruct timer in SECURE CHAT, the sender can specify when images or messages are deleted – even on the recipient’s device. This is useful if you do not want a certain text or image to stick around for too long and end up on some form of social media.
The users can also use the chat program to back up their local chat history on an SD card, as well as to encode the local chat history using a password.
The company said that the Android users of G DATA Internet Security can take benefit of the premium features like filter for incoming and outgoing messages and SMS, phishing filter for URLs in chat messages, and the option to hide SMS messages from specific contacts,
“In today’s world, the privacy of the individual as well as businesses is in constant peril with the growing ability of hackers to tap into and steal data,” said Andy Hayter, security evangelist, G DATA. “We created the SECURE CHAT app with the strongest encryption protocol possible, to offer users the ability to easily communicate with each other without having to worry about the security of their conversations and data.”
To setup the G DATA SECURE CHAT, you will be asked to verify your number, as this will be used to identify you, so that other Secure Chat users can message you, in the event you happen to install the application on another device. It will first send an SMS to your number but if it is not able to verify correctly, you have the option to verify over a voice call. This is all that it takes to create your account and you are now ready to safely message people.

6GB RAM on Samsung Smartphones

Smartphones will soon have 6GB RAM based on Samsung’s new LPDDR4 Chips

Due to the restrictions in RAM architecture it was possible to mount only 4GB RAM in most smartphone as of now. However now with Samsung announcing the next gen LPDDR4 chips, smartphones may soon support 6GB RAM.  The chips take up the same space as the Samsung’s 6Gb modules, meaning that companies can double a device’s memory in the same space — or make smaller phones that still have 3GB of RAM.
Samsung Electronics today announced that it has started mass producing 12Gb LPDDR4 RAM chips using its 20nm process technology. Samsung thus became the first company to mass produce such chips. Samsung itself noted in its press release, this will allow the creation of smartphones with 6GB of RAM.
Samsung’s LPDDR4 chips are expected to significantly accelerate the adoption of high capacity mobile DRAM worldwide. The 12Gb LPDDR4 will bring largest capacity and highest speed available for a DRAM chip, while offering excellent energy efficiency, reliability and ease of design – all essential to developing next-generation mobile devices.
According to Samsung, the new 12Gb LPDDR4 RAM chips version will be 30 percent faster at 4,266 megabits per second (Mbps) than the current 8Gb chips which are used in many 4GB smartphones. They are also twice as fast as latest DDR4 DRAM used in the PCs, while consuming 20 percent less energy, which should have a notable impact on device battery life.
Samsung says that future flagships will come with 6GB of RAM, which will allow for “seamless multitasking and maximum performance within the latest operating system (OS) environments”.

Ubuntu Powered Spider Drone

Ubuntu powered six legged spider drone “Erle-Spider” to be available from December

Spain’s Erle Robotics has launched a six-legged Erle-Spider robot on IndieGoGo, with an Erle-Brain 2 controller that runs Ubuntu Snappy Core and Robot Operating System (ROS) on a Raspberry Pi 2. According to the company, the six-legged robot weighs just over 2 kilograms (4.4lbs) and has 45 minutes of autonomy. It’s makers are trying to raise enough money for manufacturing through the IndieGoGo campaign.
Ubuntu powered six legged spider drones to be available from December
Talking about the project, Carlos Uraga, CEO of the Spanish company Erle Robotics, told Ars Technica in an e-mail: “It was interesting to several companies and communities to see that drones are not just aerial platforms and get to a robot able to walk for specific missions where a copter is not enough.” But things soon moved beyond a simple walking robot: “The final result of Erle-Spider is not the initial ‘idea’ of e.g. a pipes inspection drone, but we also realised the possibilities that this robot could bring if we made it really intelligent.”

Erle-Spider can be used as a great educational tool for kids and also for people who want to know more about robotics. The project becomes all the more exciting as the people can control it through their mobile phones, joysticks, laptops, tablets, etc. and then can use and publish apps for it. This kind of drones can also be helpful in disaster areas or places that are difficult to reach, so basically one can imagine that the number of uses of it is unlimited.
You can get one of these at a promotional price on the IndieGoGo campaign. The cheapest package will actually let you build it.
“The Linux 6-legged computer, powered by Snappy Ubuntu Core, connects to a cloud-based App store backed by Canonical, allowing users to create and sell behaviours and drone applications. Computer vision algorithms, different dynamic models and sensors implementation, are some of the features currently available,” reads the IndieGoGo project.
Erle-Spider are looking to raise $50,000 (€45,000). The open source Erle-Spider is available in early bird packages for $399 for a Do-It- Yourself (DIY) kit or $569 for the assembled version. Both are due to be shipped in December 2015. Further, the standard packages of $439 and $639, respectively, will be shipped in March 2016. A Developers Kit version of the DIY kit ships in November of this year at $499, which includes ROS technical support, more comprehensive documentation, and early access to ROS 2.0 packages.
You can invest in the the Erle-Spider’s Erle-Brain computer by paying just $149. This second-gen revision of the original Erle-Brain drives the Erle-Copter, as well as other bots and drones including the Erle-Plane, Erle-Hexacopter, and Erle-Rover. It can also switch from a BeagleBone Black mainboard to the Raspberry Pi 2, and can also run Ubuntu Snappy. The Erle-Brain 2 at $149, will be available with an 8GB microSD card equipped with the lightweight Snappy Ubuntu Core version of Ubuntu Core OS and will be shipped in December 2015.

5G wireless network

Verizon 5G service will be rolled out in 2017, expected to be faster than Google Fiber

It looks like the wireless network technology is set to go up another notch. The nation’s largest wireless carrier, Verizon will start its field tests for its fifth-generation or 5G technology within the next 12 months  and “some level of commercial deployment” will begin by 2017, Roger Gurnani, chief information and technology architect for Verizon, said in an interview last week to CNET. This comes as a surprise as earlier reports had suggested that the 5G technology would be not available to consumers until 2020.
The nation’s largest wireless carrier will begin field trials on so-called fifth-generation, or 5G, technology within the next 12 months, Roger Gurnani, chief information and technology architect for Verizon, said in an interview last week. He expects “some level of commercial deployment” to begin by 2017. That’s far earlier than the time frame of 2020 that many in the industry have pegged for the initial adoption of 5G technology.
The trials would make Verizon the world’s first carrier to seriously move into 5G. Compared to 4G, 5G wireless will benefit users with much faster download speeds, better power efficiency and more responsive performance allowing for applications like remote surgery over the cellular network.
“The future is going to bring more stuff that I can’t really describe,” Gurnani said. “We can’t possibly envision the full range of disruptive products and services. But we have some possibilities.”
The unprecedented speed has been hinted at in the past, but Verizon has some hard data that makes 5G sound even more appealing than it already was. According to the Verizon’s tests, 5G is 30 to 50 times faster than 4G,
In terms of speed, Verizon says its tests found the next-gen service is 30 to 50 times faster than the company’s current 4G offering, which is even higher than what the elusive Google Fiber offers its customers. So a movie that currently takes six minutes to download over 4G would take as few as 15 seconds. These kinds of speeds would allow for real-time streaming of movies and television shows in 4K resolution over Verizon’s cellular network.
Of course, commercial deployment of 5G networks is still a few years away. However, South Korea’s carriers should deploy a trial 5G network in time for the 2015 Winter Olympics, while Japan is working to have a 5G network running in time for the 2020 Summer Olympics. The Chinese government too has pushed aggressively for commercial deployment of 5G networks.
“At this time, our focus is on the technology field trials and accelerating the technology,” Gurnani pointed out. “For technical trials themselves, we have what we need. Beyond that, 5G will require big bands of spectrum.”
